Actors & Creators

  • Take on a Monologue or Duologue: Be part of our In100Characters Project. We’ll send you a short two-minute script — monologue or duologue — and you can learn it, join a workshop, and perform it on stage. Open to seasoned actors and complete newcomers alike — there is no barrier to entry. Anyone who requests a script will be programmed to take part, and we support everybody through the process.

  • Test New Work: The Scratch Theatre is the perfect place to bring new writing to the stage — whether it’s a short scene, an excerpt from a new production, or a full-length play. We programme slots for experimental and work-in-progress performances with kind, practical audience feedback, and we also welcome proposals for larger productions as part of our wider programme of events. Whatever stage your work is at, we’d love to hear from you.

Writers

  • Enter Writing Competitions: We run inspiring free competitions that open the door to new voices and bold ideas. Each one explores a different theme, and we’re always excited to discover fresh perspectives. We’ve staged many winners, bringing their scripts to life in packed, high-energy nights that celebrate creativity, risk-taking, and the thrill of new writing. [Click here to view our latest writing competition]

  • Submit New Work: If you have a play, monologue, or duologue you’d like to see staged — whether full-length or short-form — we’d love to hear from you. We are especially looking for pieces under 20 minutes that are creative or different. Please send us your script along with a little about yourself and the energy and purpose driving the work — what it means to you, why you wrote it, and why you think it deserves to be staged.

Community & Volunteers

  • Support & Volunteer: The Scratch Theatre thrives on the energy of its community. Volunteers help with everything from backstage support and set-up to filming, photography, and audience interviews. Sometimes it’s spreading the word with leaflets or on social media, other times it’s gathering for fun planning sessions, installing creative installations, or just being part of the buzz that makes the project happen. However you get involved, you’ll be joining a welcoming group where everyone plays a part in keeping the theatre alive and thriving. To put yourself forward as part of the volunteer team, email hello@thescratchtheatre.co.uk — we’ll let you know what opportunities are currently open.

  • Workshops, Sessions & Networking: Alongside our performances, we run free workshops and community sessions that bring people together to create, share ideas, and learn new skills. From beginner-friendly acting workshops to free programmes for women in theatre, our sessions open doors to collaboration and creative development. We don’t always have workshops scheduled — but when we do, they’re exciting, accessible, and a great way to connect with others. We currently run regular women’s performance workshops for beginners and intermediaries — click the link to find out more. Get Involved in In100Voices

In100Voices will be one of our flagship projects for 2026 — a bold evening at The Mount Without (Tuesday 10 February 2026) that explores how creativity can confront the climate crisis. It’s a night where stories, performances, and art come together to raise awareness, spark conversation, and plant trees. We’re inviting people to take part in many different ways:

  • Actors in Bristol: Join us in live performance, walkabout theatre, or flash-mob moments designed to raise awareness and ignite energy throughout the event.

  • Actors Globally: Receive a short monologue, self-film it, and become part of a digital installation of hundreds of creative voices. This is completely free, open to anyone, anywhere, and every interpretation is welcome. For every self-filmed monologue returned, we’ll plant a tree.

  • Writers: Share monologues on the climate crisis (under three minutes) for our Library of Change. We aim to approve as many as possible and send them to actors worldwide to self-film, forming part of the global digital installation.

  • Artists & Creators: Contribute climate-inspired work — from sculpture and projection to dance, music, or poetry — helping transform the venue into a living installation.
